One of the best days of the year, aka Free Comic Book Day, lands on May 4 this year, and DC Comics has a few things planned for its young readers. This annual effort helps bring in new readers and boosts the sales of independent comic book stores.
Starting today, DC is providing an exclusive 25-cent original comic, with each special edition made available nationwide at participating comic book stores. Serving as DC’s Golden Age Comic example, a free chapter of Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale by The New York Times best-selling author Lauren Myracle with artist Isaac Goodhart will be released. The full graphic novel is expected to be released on May 7th of this year.
DC Ink is releasing a sneak peek of Teen Titans: Raven, a graphic novel by Kami Garcia, which will be included in this year’s special edition of Free Comic Book Day options.
The New York Times best-selling author Michael Northrop’s book Dear Justice League will also be released on August 7th, but this year, it’s serving as FCBD’s Silver Age Comic and thus two exclusive chapters will be released starting today. With art from Gustavo Duarte, the book highlights fan-favorite heroes such as Superman and Hawkgirl.
DC’s Year of the Villain, a 25-cent comic that delves into a few of DC’s infamous villains, will also be released today and is also available for download at Comixology and ReadDC.com. It is also available for purchase at participating comic book stores. Brian Michael Bendis, Scott Snyder, and James Tynion IV have created these stories alongside Eisner Award-winning illustrators Alex Maleev, Jim Cheung and Francis Manapul.
If you are an avid fan of comics, or even if you’re looking to get into them and unsure of how, check with your local comic book store to see what events they are hosting on Saturday, May 4th. Be sure to drop in and meet some renowned authors, chat with other fans, or simply pick up some new and free comics!
